Hildebrand Goes Quickest In Class At Sebring In LMPC
J.R. Hildebrand recently tested with Genoa Racing in the new LMPC Class alongside Andy Wallace and Larry Connor at the Sebring Winter Test. It was Hildebrand's first time in a true prototype-style sportscar and also his first on the full circuit at Sebring International, but he and the rest of the team were quickly up to speed and got straight to work on the new racecar. The LMPC Class is new in the ALMS for 2010, so the team spend a good part of both days learning about the car and getting used to it's behavior, eventually setting the quickest time in class at the test.

As is often the case in the winter in Florida, things started late in the morning and ran into the late afternoon. The team was preparing for the early races on the IndyCar calendar, so their program focused on running the car at ride heights that will likely be called for on the expected surfaces at Sao Paulo Brazil in the season opener.

Day 3 Update
Today again was somewhat of a mixture of major promise with unfortunate, and this time unavoidable, circumstances. What else can you say but thats racin. I went out first in the morning which looked to be a pretty good part of the day, even with a bit of rain overnight. We did a quick run to get back in the swing of things, then went back out on our baseline tire to get a better feel for things. I found the car to generally be on the loose side which was fast in the high speed corners but particularly limiting in the slow and medium speed sections as my issues were mostly when coming off the brakes and turning in - so I really couldnt challenge the braking zones. Even so, at that time of day my 1:19.8 was quite competitive and I was due to have better rubber on the next outing. I hopped out of the car for a few minutes while they re-booted the data system after having a problem with the electricity, and then went out to do a time.

Day 2 Update
So today we got into a little bit more serious testing of some things that the team is working on for the future, taking into consideration what both Paul and I had learned yesterday as somewhat of a baseline and going from there. I didnt end up running a massively quick time, but I was really happy with how things went because of the circumstances. I ended up running my best time in an engine conservation mode that didnt allow for maximum power, but had some seriously encouraging data that Ill mention later on. Ill be back in the car tomorrow morning so Im looking forward to continuing to work on things with the team, and bringing things together on the final day.

Day 1 Update
As planned, I ran in the morning with Paul di Resta running in the afternoon. The track was cold in the early running and also quite green, so as the day wore on the track continued getting better and better on both fronts. After a brief red flag at the beginning of the session, we started into our planned testing program for the day. Without going into too much detail we ran pretty basic settings on the car to help give me a feel for the various adjustments that the car has as well as some different tire compounds. My first impressions of the car were that its just incredibly quick and capable, and its definitely different than what Im used to in its general attitude through the corner as well, so that took a bit of getting used to.

Engine Problems put Damper on Infineon Qualifying

But a sticking throttle early in the session, and the unexpected consequences of the attempted fix, shuffled J.R. back from a sure top five to twelfth for tomorrow's first race of the weekend.
The fix to the sticking throttle problem left J.R. with only 85% of normal throttle for the last thirty minutes of the session. While not enough to be quickly obvious to him, it was enough to quickly drop him in the order. The firm that maintains the IPS motors worked on the car for a lengthy period of time after the race, and the expectation is that the car should be running properly tomorrow.

Up and Down Weekend at San Jose ends on a Down
Good luck has been hard to come by for J.R. Hildebrand this season, and the past weekend at San Jose did nothing to change that. The team arrived in San Jose with high hopes, as J.R. has seemed to be on the verge of another breakthrough at each of the races since his first podium at Cleveland.

Edmonton Weekend Ends Strong
J.R. Hildebrand recovered from an unfortunate accident caused by another driver's error in Saturday's first race at Edmonton to score a top five finish on Sunday.
The weekend started off slowly. "We thought that the setup we used at Cleveland should work well at Edmonton, and that didn't really turn out to be the case." While J.R. ended the first race qualifying session only a bit more than seven tenths off the pace, that was only good for the twelfth starting position. "The field is so competitive that missing the setup by a tiny bit, or making a small mistake on a fast lap, is enough to cost you several positions in qualifying. I think we might have started a little behind, and I just couldn't make it up during the session."

After qualifying seventh, J.R. hit a patch of standing water in the monsoon-ish early restart in Toronto, ending his race after contact with the wall.

High Hopes and Competitive Weekend Marred by Unforntunate Luck in Qualifying
After getting caught out by the unpredictable rain in Saturday's qualifying, J.R. came back from his 13th starting position to post a solid ninth in today's race. He was one of the few cars in the lead group that was able to pull off passes on the fast Mont Tremblant circuit, but was unable to get by Kevin Lacroix in the last few laps to pick up another position.
"We just missed the window in the Saturday qualifying session. I was one of the last cars to come in to get new tires for my qualifying run, and on my out lap it started raining. If it had held off for five minutes, I am sure we would have started in the top five. The crew gave me a great car this weekend, and without our unfortunate luck in qualifying, I think we could have been on the podium."
More to come later.

J.R. Hildebrand, driving for Newman Wachs Racing, used a pair of solid finishes last weekend at Portland International Raceway to jump into the top ten in championship points in the Cooper Tires Presents the Champ Car Atlantic Series Powered by Mazda.
Having consistently shown the speed to compete at the front of the pack, but lacking consistent finishes due to issues both in and out of his control, Hildebrand arrived in Portland mid-pack in points following his seventh place finish at Houston. He was nevertheless in a confident frame of mind at the scene of two of his record 12 F2000 wins at PIR in 2006.

My Experience On the "Other Side of the Wall"
The opportunity to race my F2000 car with the Cooper Tires Series at the recent Champ Car Grand Prix at Cleveland, Ohio, was great for several reasons: It meant we could compete in front of a big crowd, and it gave me the chance to take a trip through the Champ Car World Series paddock to meet people, shake hands and build contacts for the future an important task for any aspiring racer. One of the people I met was the co-owner of Team Australia, Derrick Walker. Derrick has been very influential in open wheel racing as a successful and renowned team owner for many years. His team, which this year fields Alex Tagliani and Marcus Marshall, has historically been involved in both the development of drivers and of the Champ Car series itself.
Little did I know that such a meeting would lead to such a great experience for me so soon.
